Day #2, Heading to Texas

Happy New Year 2011!

It was a great travel day, I had internet all day and all times, sinse we left California. I still have Edge network, no extra expense for it. I set up a real-time travel blog and it works really well. So the time goes by fast for me!

We checked in motel, got the "Boys" settled and went to dinner next door. It was Andale Fine Mexican Cuisine and Cantina Restaurant, good atmosphere, freshly made corn tortillas and local singers and live Mariachis. It was a nice way to celebrate the new year!

431 miles - 834 miles Total Sunny Day, again!

Shadow and Corbin don't look too stressed!

Day #1 - Next Stop, Tempe, Arizona

The Journey is packed to the Gills! With the two cats and their carriers, cat litter and boxes, food for the cats, stuff we didn't want to put in storage, clothes, including heavy winter clothes, blankets, in case we get stranded in bad winter weather, etc, etc, etc. There isn't an inch of extra space!

Our plan is to not travel more than 350 miles per day. We will buy take-out food to eat in the car, because we can't leave the cats locked in the car (I never know what to call our vehicle, is it a car or a truck, something in-between, I guess!). Shadow and Corbin are not used to doing their bathroom duties in the car and they won't get fed until we reach the next motel, because the motion and food and water in their stomachs will make them get sick.

Wow! It is New Years Eve and we are driving cross country, a whole new beginning in our lives!

Stop #2 - We traveled a total of 373 miles today. Travel time 6 hrs. 39 mins. Total Miles, 403 miles Sunny Day

We Are Homeless! Really!

I made reservations at a La Quinta Inn in Irvine because Jim was familiar with it and he said it was decent. My reason was because it is advertised as "pet friendly". It worked for us and the "boys" very well, because I had booked ahead all of our stops at La Quinta's all the way to Salem, Virginia! And they were very 'pet friendly"!

This La Quinta Inn, Irvine Spectrum has a little bit of a unique history! For one it is listed in the National Registry of Historical Sites. It was converted from a bean and grain warehouse with rooms now built in a lima bean silo. They have pictures on the wall with how it originally looked. We found out, only after we checked in, that it has another unique feature! It has train tracks right next to the motel! Our room wasn't on the side of the tracks so I barely heard the train going by in the middle of the night! My prep for the colonoscopy went as planned, the colonoscopy was this morning. I was in and out of there in a very short amount of time. No after effects so "I'm hungry, let's go get something to eat!" STOP #1 - 13 miles

Leaving Laguna Beach for the last time!

The closing on the house was this morning. The Real Estate office called us and said we needed to drive over to their office in Newport Beach, because they needed our signature on more forms. Always last minute things! And it is raining! My last day of work was yesterday! I was sad and shed a few tears! I have worked for JCP for 20 years. I didn't officially retire, just took a leave of absence. I want to leave my options open so if I decide to work, maybe part-time, after we settle in Virginia, maybe I can work at one of the 2 JCP's there. (I didn't, I retired, officially, April 1st.)

I wanted to catch up and have every medical, preventive test done before we leave, medical and dental, now that I still have insurance and have doctors and dentist that I know and are familiar with. The dentist had a list of things to take care of so I was driving to his office, in lots of heavy traffic, after work. Last night was my last visit, so happy!

I had a colonoscopy scheduled on December 13th, but the doctor had a family emergency and all his patients had to be re-scheduled. My new and only date available for the procedure, before we leave, is tomorrow! I need to start preparations this afternoon at 4pm so we must be out of the house and at the motel in Irvine by then.

How did we end up in California!

We were having some really great weather here in the past couple of weeks.   I can't believe we  lived in the same house for 31 years! We moved here from Connecticut in 1979, it was a huge move for us! Jim wanted a new start and had talked about moving to California for years, I really didn't think it would happen. Going to live in California seemed to me like living in a different country! All that traffic, with freeways that I couldn't even imagine driving on.

But, it happened! Jim worked in sales and an opening became available for a territory in Southern California for the same company. His employer agreed to give him the position and pay expenses for our move. Jim had relatives, his grandmother, a couple of aunts and cousins living in Southern California. So he flew there and stayed with one of them and worked his territory for about a month. One week-end he drove down PCH, Pacific Coast Highway, and just before he drove into Laguna Beach, he saw a Realtor's office and impulsively pulled into one of their parking places. He looked at many houses in different cities, but really liked Laguna Beach! We couldn't afford a house there but Jim and this Real Estate Agent found a house that the owner was willing to take a second on the property and Jims employer fibbed and said Jim was making more money than he actually did!

We actually owned a full ocean view house, a small house, in the resort town of Laguna Beach! And unseen by me! I could never, even imagine, that one day, many years later, that this little house would grow in value and finance some very nice travel around the world!

Do we really want to move?
