Kandy

While we were in Sri Lanka we decided to take a steam train, from Colombo's Fort Station, to the UNESCO Heritage site in Kandy, Sri Lanka to explore the last capital of the Sinhalese monarchy, which was established in 543 BC and ended in 1815. The Temple of Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist Temple located in the Royal Palace Complex. It is suppose to have the molar of Buddha stored here. Kandy is a mountain resort and the main part of the city overlooks an artificial lake built by the last King of Sri Lanka in 1806. We were told about the bombing attack here in 1998 by a terrorist group called Tamil Tigers. They left a truck full of explosives at the entrance where it was detonated. The act in such a devotedly religious country was said to be equivalent to bombing St. Peters in Rome to Catholics or Mecca to Muslims. This is one of the holiest places of worship and pilgrimage for Buddhist around the world. It was a long day, almost 13 hours before we returned to Colombo, but the train ride through the villages and country side was very enjoyable.
