West Virginia Capital Complex

We have driven past the Capital Building in Charleston, West Virginia a few times this summer traveling around the country. Of course, I had to snap a picture each time of that beautiful gold dome! Well, this week-end we finally made our way to see it up close. It is a Saturday so we just pulled up in front of the building, easy! I didn't have a lot of time to explore everything and missed many photo opportunities but enjoyed the visit.

The first capital city was located in Wheeling. It was later moved to Charleston, then back to Wheeling, and then back to Charleston.

Cass Gilbert from Ohio was the designer of this building, also the state capital buildings in Minnesota and Arkansas and the U.S. Treasury Building, the U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington D.C. He designed the world's first skyscraper, the Woolworth building in New York City.

Another place we stopped at was Tamarack in Beckley, WV. It's a showcase for West Virginia Artisans where you can find many stunning displays of art, crafts and furniture. They also had a great place for lunch in the "Taste of West Virginia" cafeteria managed by "The Greenbrier Resort". Favorites are the fried green tomato sandwiches and the rainbow trout.
